We caught up with chief writer Owen Pye and asked him a few words about the book:

How did the book idea come about?
THE IDEA WAS FLOATED IN THREESIXTY HEADQUARTERS EARLIER THIS YEAR WITH ROB BARBER AND MIKE SEARLE, WE FIGURED THE WORLD WAS FULL OF SURF TRAVEL GUIDES BUT THAT BODYBOARDING WASN’T CATERED FOR … SO WE SET ABOUT THE TASK OF CREATING WHAT UNTIL NOW THE BOOGERS OF THE WORLD HAVE BEEN MISSING – A TRAVEL BOOK TO CALL OUR OWN.
What was the most interesting nugget of info that you came across during your study?
I THINK THE MOST INTERESTING BITS OF INFORMATION HAVE COME FROM THE PROS, WHO READILY GAVE THEIR OPINIONS ON SPOTS AND TOP TRAVEL TIPS … GOLD.
What are your top 5 favourite images in the book?
TOUGH CALL! I LOVE THE SHOT OF LEME IN BRAZIL, THAT WEDGE IS ABSOLUTELY NUTS, ALSO THE IMAGES OF P-PASS, TEAHUPO’O, THE AERIAL LINE UP SHOT OF PIPE AND THE WIDER AIR SHOT OF TAHITI … THERE ARE SO MANY AMAZING PHOTOS IN THERE IT MAKES ME WANT TO CRY.
Of all the spots that you researched, which is the favourite that you have visited and why?
I THINK ONE OF MY FAVOURITES WOULD HAVE TO BE CLOUD 9, IT IS JUST SUCH A PERFECT WAVE … TAKE OFF, SCOOP, GET SHACKED FOR AN AGE AND STRAIGHT INTO AN AIR SECTION ON THE END, TURN, PADDLE, REPEAT. NOT TO MENTION THE SETTING AND THE ISLAND IN GENERAL, SIARGAO IS SO BEAUTIFUL, A MUST VISIT FOR ANY TRAVELLING BOOGER!
Which is the spot that you haven’t been to but has really caught your imagination to travel there now?
I WOULD SAY ONE PALM POINT, IT IS ONE OF THE MOST PERFECT LEFT HANDERS EVER FOUND, IN SOME OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL AND REMOTE WILDERNESS – I’D LOVE TO SCORE THERE.
How do you use the book, isn’t it just like the Storm Rider Guide?
THE BODYBOARD TRAVEL GUIDE IS A UNIQUE TOOL AIMED SQUARELY AT BODYBOARDERS. THE WAVES, DESCRIPTIONS, TRIP TIPS, TRAVEL HINTS, INFORMATION AND RESOURCES HAVE ALL BEEN RESEARCHED, WRITTEN, COMPILED AND LAID OUT FOR BODYBOARDERS, WHO FOR TOO LONG HAVE BEEN LEFT WITH NO OPTION BUT TO BUY A SURF TRAVEL GUIDE AND TRY TO DEDUCE WHICH OF THE STAND UP SPOTS MIGHT BE ALRIGHT FOR THE SPONGE. WITH THIS BOOK YOU ARE INTRODUCED TO SOME OF THE BEST BODYBOARDING WAVES ON THE PLANET, HOPEFULLY INSPIRING YOU TO GET OUT THERE, SURF THEM AND FIND YOUR OWN!
Which out of the pro’s were the most helpful?
IT’S HARD TO SINGLE OUT WHICH GUYS WERE MOST HELPFUL, ALL THE PROS I SPOKE WITH WERE VERY GENEROUS WITH THEIR TIME AND HAPPY TO HELP IN WHATEVER WAY THEY COULD TO CREATE THE BEST BODYBOARD BOOK AVAILABLE. IT JUST GOES TO SHOW WHAT A TIGHT-KNIT AND UNIQUE SPORT WE HAVE WHEN SO MANY OF THE BEST RIDERS GET BEHIND AND SUPPORT A PROJECT LIKE THIS.
What did you learn from being involved in the production of the book?
I LEARNED JUST HOW LONG IT TAKES TO EDIT THE DAMNED THING! ALSO THE STIRLING EFFORTS OF ROB BARBER, MIKE SEARLE AND DESIGN GURU DAVID ALCOCK, WHOSE AMAZING SKILLS HAVE MADE IT WHAT IT IS. TOTAL TEAM EFFORT.
What’s next?
WELL AFTER FULFILLING MY REMAINING CONTRACT REQUIREMENTS OF GLOBAL BOOK SIGNINGS, BLACK TIE DINNERS WITH RICHARD BRANSON AND CUTTING THE RIBBON AT A BUNCH OF NEW ALDI STORES AROUND THE GREATER THAMES ESTUARY I’LL GET BACK TO MY NORMAL ROUTINE OF TRAINING SEALS FOR NASA. BUT BEFORE ALL THAT I’M BUSY WRITING FOR A NEW SURF TRAVEL BOOK WHICH ORCA PUBLICATIONS WILL RELEASE NEXT YEAR, THREESIXTY STUFF, A TRIP TO THE CANARIES FOR THE FRONTON COMP AND VARIOUS FREELANCE PROJECTS IN BETWEEN.
